Yoda’s Clinical Ambitions

I came across this sign at the train stop I get off on when I go to school. Being an avid Star Wars fan, I thought it was hilarious and immediately took a picture of it.

Yoda's Medical Ambitions

There’s that classic line in the Empire Strikes Back when Luke meets Yoda for the first time and tells him he is looking for a Jedi Master. Yoda’s response, as all Star Wars fans should know, was:

Jedi Master? Yoda, you seek Yoda!

After seeing this sign, an altered version keeps popping in my mind:

OB/GYN? Yoda, you seek Yoda!

Hope everyone enjoys this as much as I did!

Cheers-

The wow factor never ends…

So I’m on the train today on the way to school and hear this conversation:

middle school girl 1: so, is you grandmother still alive?
middle school girl 2: yeah, but barely…
*pause*
middle school girl 1: that’s good, if you have a grandmother she’ll give you money.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess that I’m not the only one who considers this to be a rather disturbing conversation. I’m trying to convince myself that I misunderstood the context, or just don’t know these girls well enough to say that they actually meant what they said. However, I also heard what they said before and afterwards, and I’m pretty sure they meant it in the same rough, callous way it came across to me.

What a shame.

Boggle

The other day I went to an audition for a Japanese TV show called?”za sekai gyoutei nyuusu” which roughly translates to “Amazing Stories from Around the World”. At this audition I met this guy we shall call Bob. Two things caught my attention about Bob. One was that he had startling blue eyes. The other was that he appeared to be a total prick.

But I never voice my personal opinions about strangers I’ve just met, just in case I happen to be wrong (plus it’s a bit rude). Five minutes later though, I was positive about Bob’s prickness. And it was only one sentence that did it for me:

“…and I met this girl last night, dude, and f*cked her in the bathroom.”

Wow. Just what I wanted to hear (in case you can’t catch it, my voice is drenched in sarcasm).

I have no interest in strangers’ sex lives, and even less so when they talk about their sexual conquests in such a matter that disrespects and demeans their partner. This ‘dude’ was talking about the girl as if she was a bone some dog picks off the street. I laughed in response, out of surprise and amazement that he had the gall to talk like that, and responded with, “Yeah, I’ve heard foreigners can get away with stuff like that.” I think he got my drift, because he calmed down a bit after that (for those of you who consider my response a tad tame, I do my best not to make enemies with anyone, even if they disgust me – I just make sure to never associate with them ever again).

I can only hope that Bob eventually realizes the error of his ways soon (doubtful) and learns to respect both himself and others (I can dream, right?).

By the way, for those of you wondering, I got the part I auditioned for. Bob didn’t (oh, darn).

That’s all for now.

Progress!

For those of you who don’t know yet, I am writing a book. Yep, me. And I used to think I hated writing! Fortunately I realized that I didn’t really hate writing, just writing about stuff that didn’t interest me…Too bad it took me ten years to realize that! Oh well, as the saying goes, better late than never.

I made a fair bit of progress today on my novel. Without a doubt, a good coffee shop like Starbucks is the ideal place for me to write. The atmosphere is just lively enough to help me focus, and the surroundings really help me get into the proper state of mind.

So far I’ve finished about a quarter of the first novel in the series. Or at least I think I have. There’s a chance that when I start editing, the manuscript will shrink significantly. I’m fine with that; being a new writer I expect my learning curve to last another year or two. I think it will take that long to firmly settle into my style and find out what my ideal writing pace is. I keep reminding myself, it took J. K. Rowling five years to write the first Harry Potter book. I’m on year two or three, depending on how you count, and well on track to finishing before then.

Good progress today!
